The Asphalt Jungle
Submitted by jack on January 27, 2007 - 11:28am.Gripping noir with plenty of tragedy to go around! Features Marilyn Monroe's first screen appearance (as a minor character). John Huston makes L.A. look very "Detroitish."
Idiocracy
Submitted by jack on January 21, 2007 - 10:21pm.The latest from Mike Judge didn't exactly kill at the box office, which only confirms to cultdom. Two slightly dim people from our generation accidently get transported 500 years into the future. The gene pool has been so dumbed down that they are relative geniuses. This movie is horribly funny... Mike Judge will convince you that the future is now. Idiocracy rules!! read more »
Who Killed the Electric Car?
Submitted by jack on January 13, 2007 - 11:45am.Very well-done documentary about a truly amazing car that actually existed by the 100's. Since they could only be leased, they were gathered up and shredded by GM and other carmakers... apparently so that they wouldn't catch on w/ the public. read more »
Richard Pryor: Here and Now
Submitted by jack on January 13, 2007 - 11:40am.This stand-up concert was filmed in 1983 in New Orleans when Richard Pryor was at the top of his game. Well-shot and hilarious once you get into it and if you can deal w/ the word "m*th*rf*ck*r" and " read more »
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Submitted by jack on January 13, 2007 - 11:35am.I abhor autoslum/nascar culture. I was worried that this Will Ferrell flick wouldn't harsh out enough. Happily, I was wrong. Tastelessness right where it should be. VERY funny.
The Devil Wears Prada
Submitted by jack on January 13, 2007 - 11:16am.Inconsistant fluff, but it's hard not to like Anne Hathaway. Her boyfriend in the flick was supremely annoying, so I hate the ending.
The Illusionist
Submitted by jack on January 1, 2007 - 4:38pm.A very clever and beautiful period film that delivers on all levels. Watched it w/ a guild screener (nominates for the oscars) and he's giving it full marks. Deservedly so. One of those rare films where you want to see it again and pick up the clues you know you missed the first time. read more »
Blood Diamond
Submitted by jack on January 1, 2007 - 4:35pm.I take great interest in this topic but not enthralled with the film. The important stuff: it was in Nat'l Geographic. (I'm blessed to have a wonderful wife who has evolved beyond the need for shiny rocks.) The vividness of the violence and mayhem is shocking beyond belief, but maybe I've just been re-sensitized. read more »
Miss Potter
Submitted by jack on January 1, 2007 - 4:30pm.A welcome relief... we get to explore the creative mind as Miss Potter creates Peter Rabbit and prepares for the masses. Terrific story and performances without the typical hollywood schlock. Filmed on location in N. read more »
Criss Cross
Submitted by jack on December 19, 2006 - 3:49pm.This is classic noir. Richard Burton gets tangled up in the mob -- for love. This is one of those films that makes you only want to see black-n-white.
